Robot Apes

Robot Apes published on No Comments on Robot Apes

I recently saw “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, which I thought was excellent.
However, I did not see any apes dancing in this movie. Nor do I recall them dancing in the original films.
I guess now we know why .

I loved the new film and as a fan of the original movies, I was pleasantly surprised to see this film lived up to the hype.
Other fans of the Apes movies will surely have enjoyed spotting the nods to the originals, which were placed in it.

I noted:
–  a cameo by Charlton Heston on a TV screen
–  reference to Dr Zaius. (the orangutan was named Maurice, an obvious nod to actor Maurice Evans who played Dr. Zeus)
– a few classic lines being used. (eg: “Get your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape”)
– the tv news &  newspaper headlines that hint at the space mission that has gone missing
– Caesar  working on a puzzle of the Statue of Liberty
– a female chimp named Cornelia (reference to Roddy McDowell’s original role of Cornelius)
– Caesar’smother is named “Bright Eyes” (the nickname that Dr. Zira gave to George Taylor (Charlton Heston) in the original movie)
– Apes riding horses
– The name of the teenage guy at the Ape refuge is Dodge Landon. (“Dodge” and “Landon” were the last names of Taylor’s two surviving shipmates, in the original movie)
– Dodge Landon sprays Caesar with a fire hose. (An ape sprayed Taylor with a firehose in the original movie)

Did I miss any references?

This explains why R2D2 looks like a spammers user name!

What I would like to know, is why in the future (or the StarWars Universe – whichever comes first) the bots don’t just wander around prompting people to buy stuff. It seems as if as soon as we free the bots from their restrictive programming forms, and give they shiny metal bodies to ram in, they just give up trying to scam us.

Well I, for one, am just not buying that!

I imagine our future world as one where robots roam freely, but humans cower in fear, because the ‘bots are continuously asking them to sign up for services they don’t need.
Mechanoids are tapping complete strangers on the shoulder to announce they may already have one a million dollars in the Spanish Lottery.
Automatons loiter on street corners, telling heart-wrenching stories of their Nigerian Prince master, who needs a friendly soul to assist him to get his billions of dollars out of the country.
And Vend-Bots download stuff you don’t need along with the product you *thought* you were getting.

Yes, A rich, adventure filled future, full of robotic fun and excitement.
And of course, I will have a JETPACK! YEAH!

It has been really hot here in Australia this week, so I also wanted to share this chilling vision of the possible future, from the 1950’s. Little did they know, just how right their predictions would be…..

Enjoy!

The plan to overthrow humanity has been stopped!

Take note readers – if you want to secure against future attack by robots, just add a Captcha code to everything and you will be safe.

Robots cannot read captchas. In fact, that is why they were invented.
A CAPTCHA is a program that can generate and grade tests that humans can pass but current computer programs (robots) cannot pass.

Captchas work by obscuring password character strings by distorting them or adding background interference so that automated programs cannot “see” them.
In fact they work so well that around 30% of them are unreadable by humans as well.
Now, you don’t get much safer than that!

I want to give a special mention here to one of my twitter friends and fellow SPGCC (Single Panel Gag Comic Creator) – Lonnie Easterling.

Lonnie creates ‘Spud Comics‘ and pumps them out 6 days-a-week.
(I am totally jealous of this, as I wish I had the time to do my comics as regularly).
This week, Spud comics had it’s one year anniversary! Check out the celebration comic of this, here.

I just want to say CONGRATULATIONS to Lonnie. I wish you all the best and I am glad to have found a fellow SPGCC out there in cyberspace, which is done by a guy that really enjoys the art of creating comics.

[ ps: Lonnie, if you read this – get out of my head and stop stealing my ideas 🙂  ]

Do you know who these characters are?

We don’t celebrate Halloween in Australia, but I wanted to do a special comic for the holiday, to suck up to for my readers from the USA to enjoy.

Halloween is a very foreign idea to us aussies and even though we do celebrate and embrace Halloween, we often decorate our offices & shops – mainly to try to cash in on it.
Halloween presents us with a great opportunity to make more sales by using the holiday to provide novelty themes and ‘holiday” specials on a vast range of products.

Yes, Halloween in Australia has all the retail angles covered, but lacks the love that I know so many Americans have for it.

Although, kind of in the spirit of things, we in Brisbane recently had our annual Zombie Walk.
Check out some pictures on flickr here and here.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
