Sometimes, businesses just do not get what social networking can offer to them and with it is all about.

When I had the idea for this comic, I was thinking about what Ronald could do to really damage a brand like McDonalds.

There are many examples of a business or a corporation jumping headfirst into using social networking tools, to try to market themselves or create buzz about their brand.
There are also many examples of businesses trying to steer social streams towards themselves, or attempting to flog their products inappropriately within a community conversation.

Rather than using the available networks and their flow maximise their brand & build a community, they attempt to control what is happening to suit their own purposes.

Many businesses are also scared by the real-time feedback that is possible through avenues such as twitter & facebook. They may even attempt to control what is said about them, which is nearly impossible in a public forum such as the internet.

When businesses or corporations make mistakes in an online environment, the results can be quick, long lasting and damaging to their brand.

What do you think about corporations using social media platforms?
Does it enhance or detract from their images and goals?.

The terms of separation

Significant change happens to us all.
Sometimes we see it coming, and other times in pounces on you, like an overactive 4yr old from a trampoline.

We often prepare for things as best we can, by writing wills or deciding who gets custody of the plasma TV & Playstation.
But in this modern age, there are now other things that we need to be aware of when life changes tap us on the shoulder and says “OK, your turn!”

If you died tomorrow, what happens to your facebook or twitter account? (Don’t worry about the Myspace account. No one wants that).

Which of your kids inherits your WOW account, or is allowed to access the media server?

Who gets the iPhone and the passwords to your iTunes account (and free reign of the app store)?

Start thinking people! These things will not take care of themselves!

Here is the scenario –
You find a map that tantalizingly promises a treasure of untold wealth.
You follow the clues, battle through the obstacles and finally reach your goal!

Only to find that the prize is of no worth!
DAMN!

I find the story of Friendster both funny and educational.
It was first to market in the now popular social media space, but squandered the opportunity by not being a reliable service and not engaging it’s users enough to keep them. Read more about this here

Friendster let it’s position slip and MySpace took over.

Ahhh, MySpace.  Remember that site?

This comic originally appeared as a guest submission on Bearman Cartoon’s website.
He did a great writeup for me and his regular site visitors even seemed to like what I did.

I am re-posting the comic here to give people an alternative place to view it.

Now that you have seen it, why not head on over to the Bearman cartoons site, have a look at his work and say “Hi” from me while you are there. Enjoy!
